New fitness studio opens at Burscough Wellbeing and Leisure Hub
West Lancashire Borough Council is pleased to announce the completion of an enhanced fitness experience at Burscough Wellbeing and Leisure Hub following the completion of a £300,000 investment to create a new dedicated group exercise studio.
The transformation has seen an underused squash court converted into a significantly larger and more versatile fitness studio, designed to meet increasing demand for group exercise and wellbeing activities.
Completed in June 2026, the project forms part of the Council's ongoing commitment to improving leisure facilities and supporting healthier lifestyles across the Borough.
The new space features sprung flooring, mirrored walls, specialist lighting, upgraded ventilation, enhanced acoustics and new audio-visual technology, providing a modern environment for a wide range of fitness classes.
The Hub continues to retain a squash court, ensuring residents can still enjoy racquet sports while benefiting from an expanded fitness offer.
The investment follows a review of participation trends and customer demand which highlighted opportunities to make better use of existing space within the leisure centre.
Over the coming months, residents will see a growing programme of classes introduced in the new studio, creating more opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get active.
The Council will also be launching an exciting new Les Mills fitness programme, offering a combination of instructor-led and virtual classes. This will provide members with access to world renowned workouts, greater flexibility and a wider range of fitness options throughout the day.
The project has been delivered with sustainability in mind. By repurposing existing internal space rather than constructing an extension, the scheme minimised embodied carbon and reduced the need for additional building materials. Energy-efficient LED lighting and upgraded ventilation systems have also been installed to support more sustainable operations.
In addition, the new facility will enable Burscough Wellbeing and Leisure Centre to expand its programme of fitness and wellbeing classes, while providing participants with a more comfortable, modern and welcoming environment than the existing accommodation.
Councillor David Whittington, Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council, said:
“This investment demonstrates our commitment to continuously improving leisure facilities for residents and ensuring our centres evolve to meet changing customer needs.
"The new studio provides a fantastic modern environment for group exercise and wellbeing activities, allowing us to expand our class programme and offer an even greater choice for members.
"We're particularly excited about the introduction of the new Les Mills programme, which will give residents access to industry-leading fitness classes delivered both by our instructors and through innovative virtual technology.
"The feedback we've received already has been extremely positive, and we're delighted to see residents embracing the new space and the opportunities it creates for healthier and more active lifestyles."
The new studio is now open and already proving popular with members. The investment represents another step forward in the Council's wider programme of leisure improvements, helping to ensure residents across West Lancashire have access to modern facilities, innovative fitness programmes and high-quality opportunities to improve their health and wellbeing.
Early feedback from members has been overwhelmingly positive, with users praising the studio's spacious layout, improved atmosphere and enhanced equipment. One regular member described the facility as "a huge improvement that feels like a completely new fitness space," while another commented that "the larger studio and improved sound system have transformed the class experience."
