Shared ownership housing scheme now complete as Council delivers affordable solutions for new homeowners

West Lancashire Borough Council is pleased to announce the completion of its first shared ownership housing scheme in Hesketh Bank.

This landmark project marks a significant step forward in the Council’s commitment to increasing the supply of high‑quality, affordable homes for residents across the Borough.

The development features 10 newly built bungalows, comprising six two bedroom and four three‑bedroom homes, designed to meet a range of housing needs. The homes offer modern, energy‑efficient living in a sought‑after location.

All 10 homes were sold off‑plan prior to completion, demonstrating strong demand for affordable home ownership opportunities.

Shared ownership is a government‑backed affordable housing initiative designed to help people who may not be able to purchase a home outright on the open market.

Buyers purchase an initial share of the property and pay rent on the remaining portion. Over time, they can increase their ownership share through a process known as staircasing, providing a flexible and achievable route to full home ownership.

Councillor Neil Furey, Committee Chair for Communities and Environment, said: “Delivering our first shared ownership scheme is an important milestone for West Lancashire. These new homes represent a meaningful step toward tackling the national challenge of affordable home ownership.

“Shared Ownership at Becconsall isn’t just for first‑time buyers. We’re also seeing previous homeowners who can’t afford to buy outright, as well as existing shared owners looking to move.

“It’s a flexible option that supports people at different stages of their housing journey and it’s important we highlight this clearly as we move into marketing Maryvale and the strong demand we’re seeing across the Borough shows just how vital this type of housing has become.”

This scheme is a shared ownership project delivered by West Lancashire Borough Council in partnership with Tawd Valley Developments Ltd. The scheme has been designed by John McCall Architects and built by Highall Construction."
