West Lancashire to remember the Fallen

  • Armistice Day will be 11 November
  • Remembrance Sunday will follow on 12 November
  • Mayor and Council representatives will join public for commemorations

Every year on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, our communities pay tribute to those who have lost their lives serving our country. Armistice Day tributes will take place on Saturday 11 November followed by Remembrance Sunday commemorations across the Borough on Sunday November 12.

Mayor of West Lancashire, Councillor Maureen Nixon, said: "It is such an important time of year when West Lancashire remembers the sacrifices made to protect our citizens and our freedoms.

"It never loses its poignancy and I invite everyone in the Borough to join me in paying our respects, not only to those who have fallen in the wars of the past, but to those who continue to protect us today."

Details of the commemorations across the Borough are as follows:

ARMISTICE DAY – Saturday 11 NOVEMBER 2023

ORMSKIRK - CORONATION PARK

There will be a short service and a two-minute silence at the War Memorial in Coronation Park, Ormskirk.  Guests/the public are invited to gather around 10.45am.  All are welcome. The Mayor, Councillor Maureen Nixon and her Consort Laughton Wilkinson, will be leading the Armistice Service.

BURSCOUGH - HMS RINGTAIL MONUMENT, PIPPIN STREET, RINGTAIL RETAIL PARK

There will be a short service and a two-minute silence after which wreaths will be laid at the monument. Guests/the public are invited to gather at around 10.20am. The Acting Deputy Mayor, Councillor Gareth Dowling on this occasion will be laying a wreath on the Mayor's behalf.

 

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY – 12 NOVEMBER 2023

ORMSKIRK            The Mayor, Councillor Maureen Nixon, Chief Operating Officer, Jacqui Sinnott-Lacey, Martin Ainscough, Deputy Lieutenant and Ashley Dalton MP will be in attendance.

09.20             Parade assembles at St. Anne’s R.C. Church

09.30            Short service, silence, Last Post, laying of wreaths, Reveille.

09.50            Parade will march off to the War Memorial in Coronation Park via Aughton Street into Park Avenue and into the rear entrance of Coronation Park for a short  service.

10.15            Parade will march to the Parish Church from Coronation Park emerging from Park Pool entrance and up to the Church.  A salute will be taken on the way to the parish church.

10.40            Main Service of Remembrance inside the Parish Church, Last Post, laying of wreaths, Reveille.

 

SKELMERSDALE

10.35            The Acting Deputy Mayor, Councillor Nicola Pryce Roberts accompanied by the Council's Head of Legal and Democratic Services, Kay Lovelady, will join the Parade, which marches from Sandy Lane to the War Memorial.

11.00             Service and wreath laying ceremony.

AUGHTON

12.15            The Parade assembles at the War Memorial in Granville Park for the Service of Remembrance.

BURSCOUGH

14.00            The Mayor, Councillor Maureen Nixon will attend a Remembrance parade commencing at 1.30pm from the British Legion, Lord Street, Burscough, parading to the Memorial Garden. A short service will commence at 2.00pm.

HALSALL    

10.45              A short wreath laying service at the War Memorial.

LATHOM

10.20            The Parade assembles at Lathom Park War Memorial, Hall Lane for a wreath laying ceremony at 10.20 which is followed by a Service of Remembrance in Lathom Park Chapel at 10.50am.

UP HOLLAND

10.50              The Parade assembles at the War Memorial at Vicarage Corner for a 30-minute wreath laying ceremony.
