Police and crime commissioner elections

Police and Crime Commissioners do not run the police but are responsible for holding the police to account for the public. The first election for a Police and Crime Commissioner took place on Thursday 15 November 2012 and Clive Grunshaw was elected for the Lancashire police area. The second took place on Thursday 5 May 2016 and Clive Grunshaw was re-elected.

Results of 2016 election

The first preferences are counted, and if a candidate has received more than 50% of the votes cast they are elected. If no candidate has more than 50% of the vote, all candidates apart from those in the first and second place are eliminated.

Second preference vote results

The ballot papers showing a first preference for the eliminated candidates are checked for their second preference. Any second preference votes for the two remaining candidates are then added to the candidates’ first preference votes and the candidate with the most votes wins.  The number of second preference votes for the top two candidates were:
