Scrap metal

If you intend to operate as a scrap metal dealer then you must, under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 apply for a licence with any authority in which you operate. Failure to do so is a criminal offence and subject to a fine.

There are two different scrap metal dealer licences as detailed below:

Site licence

A site licence authorises the licensee to carry on business at a site or multiple sites within West Lancashire. The fees for this licence are detailed below:

  • New application: £335.94
  • Additional named site on site licence: £98.80(per site)
  • Variation to exiting licence: £98080
  • Replacement licence: £23.71

The licence fees stated above are comprised of (a) an initial fee and (b) a successful application fee . For ease, the full licence fee can be paid on application. In such cases, the successful application fee (b) would be refunded if your application is refused.

If you wish to pay fee (a) and fee (b) separately, please contact the Licensing Service. Fee (a) should be paid on application and fee (b) should be paid if your licence is granted.

Please note that successful applicants will not be issued with a licence without payment of the fee in full.

  • New application: £158.10
  • Variation to existing licence: £98.80
  • Replacement licence: £23.71

The licence fees stated above are comprised of (a) an initial fee and (b) a successful application fee . For ease, the full licence fee can be paid on application. In such cases, the successful application fee (b) would be refunded if your application is refused.

If you wish to pay fee (a) and fee (b) separately, please contact the Licensing Service. Fee (a) should be paid on application and fee (b) should be paid if your licence is granted.

It is important to note that a person or company may only hold one of the above licences within West Lancashire and could not operate both a site licence and collector's licence.
