Proposed linear parks

There are plans for a number of linear parks in West Lancashire.  These are combined footpaths, cycle paths and bridleways, usually stretching for a number of miles.

Former Ormskirk to Skelmersdale railway line

In 2006, in partnership with Lancashire County Council, we commissioned consultants to undertake a feasibility study into a proposed linear park (footpath/cycle path/bridleway) along the route of the disused rail line between Ormskirk and Skelmersdale.

The study involved exhibitions and sending questionnaires to local residents asking for their views on the project. The study demonstrated overwhelming support for the idea of the path, but also identified issues that would need to be addressed before any path could be put in place.

Other linear parks

Further linear parks are proposed between Ormskirk and Burscough, along the River Douglas between Tarleton and Hesketh Bank and along a disused railway line at Banks. These have been taken into account during the preparation of the Local Plan 2012-2027, and through the Community Infrastructure Levy process.
